15 Years of Plymouth Humanists

This year marks the 15th anniversary of Plymouth Humanists. We’ve achieved a great deal over that time. We organised over 100 talks on very varied topics, ranging from the works of Shelley to quantum physics, and from assisted dying to climate change. On top of that, there were numerous social events such as meals, walks, discussion groups, book clubs, and cultural outings to watch films and visit museum exhibitions.

We have also represented humanism more widely in the local community by participating at Plymouth Pride, Respect Festivals, Remembrance Day and Holocaust Memorial Day events. Over 5000 children have heard about humanism from our school speakers. We have had for many years a humanist representative on Plymouth SACRE (the council committee that sets the local RE syllabus), and have a volunteer working in the pastoral care team at the University.

We wanted to take the opportunity to thanks all those who have made this possible – our chairs (Sid, Jacob, Ben, Martin, Jessica and Rich), our long-standing secretary Tim (who most of you will know from the email communications), our committee members, those who have volunteered at events, our paying members, who give us the financial resources to keep the groups running, all those who donate at talks, and those who come along to and enjoy our events.

We’re sure the coming years will bring their own challenges, but we aim to continue providing a community for, and visibility of, local humanists.
