Our first talk of the autumn was from Jack Hawkins of First Light, who spoke to us in September. First Light is a charity for anyone who has experienced domestic or sexual abuse. John is an Independent Sexual Violence Adviser and spoke to us about his work supporting his clients (who in his case are mostly men) through the criminal justice process. This can be very traumatic for some victims, taking between 18 months and two years, and sadly with no guarantee of a conviction at the end (the conviction rate for rape and sexual offences is only about 3%).
This proved to be a very interactive talk, with questions from the audience taking up a large part of the evening. We had a collection at the end to support the work of First Light – if anyone would like to donate, you can do so here: https://www.firstlight.org.uk/get-involved/donate/
