Wellbeing – why it matters and what we can do about it

Wellbeing is an important subject, but one that too often gets lost the bustle of day to day life.  Roger Higman, director of Totnes based Network of Wellbeing, talked to us in November about why wellbeing matters and what we can do to improve it.

Plenty of research has been carried out in recent years to understand what makes people happy with their lives and what doesn’t. Pursuing your passions rather than money, for instance, makes for greater contentment. It was good to hear that living in the South West and near the coast also boosted people’s wellbeing.  But there are downsides – suffering from unemployment, mental illness or being part of an ethnic minority all reduce overall happiness.

But what can we do personally to boost our wellbeing? Well there are five well-known ways:

  • Taking note of our surroundings and the world around us
  • Taking exercise
  • Connecting with others
  • Learning
  • Giving
