Book Club - The Penelopiad

Culture Club
Date: Monday, 18 March 2019 19:00

Venue: The B-Bar, Barbican Theatre

In the early days of our book club we read Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”. Now we’re going to revisit her works and look at one of her most recent books. “The Penelopiad” is a novella published in 2005 as part of the first set of books in the Canongate Myth Series where contemporary authors rewrite ancient myths. In book, Penelope reminisces on the events of the Odyssey, life in Hades, Odysseus, Helen of Troy, and her relationships with her parents. A Greek chorus of the twelve maids, whom Odysseus believed were disloyal and whom Telemachus hanged, interrupt Penelope's narrative to express their view on events.

If you’ve not been to one of our book clubs before, we’ll have at least one copy of the book on our table to help you find us.
