May talk - What does the Future hold for Legal Aid?

There’s increasing concern being expressed over the effects of cuts to the Legal Aid budget, and after our May talk it’s easy to see why.

Luke Fisher from the University of Plymouth gave the talk and started off by covering the history of Legal Aid. He then rapidly moved on to describe the scale of the cuts in recent years, and the effect they are having. It seems clear that access to legal advice is being seriously undermined for large swathes of the population, threatening people’s right to a fair trial, a right which is protected under Article 6 of the Human Rights Act. Sadly there seems little hope of the situation improving any time soon. Thanks to Luke for such an informative talk.
