South West Regional Conference 2014

Saturday 10th May 2014 saw the first South West Regional Conference for Humanists and allied groups.

The venue was Casa Maroc, a restaurant in Exeter, and as well as the organisers, Plymouth Humanists, there were also representatives from Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.  After an introduction from Ben, chair of Plymouth Humanists, the morning was devoted to presentations on a variety of topics, including provision of educational resources on Humanism for schools, the work of Humanist celebrants and building and growing a local group.

After a buffet lunch, the afternoon was devoted to two workshops.  The first developed ideas from the morning’s talk on educational resources for schools, while the second discussed how best to find and share speakers, as well as other types of events groups could run to raise their profile.

By the end of the day a number of areas for further action had been agreed.  It is now hoped to run a local training course for volunteers willing to talk to schools about Humanism, and ways of sharing both information on speakers and their costs (so they can talk to several groups in the South West on one trip) were identified.  Finally, outline plans for a major regional event, featuring a number of high profile Humanists, were prepared.

The day was a real success, and it was agreed that further such events will be run in the future.
